In a bookbinding machine wherein the book fillers 26 are conveyed horizontally between clamps 1 on a conveyer system, and the book covers 27 are fed from below and obliquely to a cover-applying station by lugs 7 on conveyer chains 6, the means for transferring each cover from the chains 6 to the back of a filler 26 is arranged between the horizontal conveyer for the fillers 26 and the cover conveyer 5 and includes a plane support member 12. Each cover 27 is supported by guide rails 3 and side rails 8, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), until it reaches the transfer position. In the latter position, the plate 12 is swung between the chains 6 and beneath the cover 27, then upwardly and rearwardly to press the cover on to the gummed spine of the filler 26, the speed of the rearward movement of the plate 12 being equal to the speed of the conveyer clamps 1. The plate 12 has nozzles 13 therein connected to a source of suction, and has adjustable abutment stops 14 to facilitate the transfer of the cover 27. The plate 12 is mounted on a rocker 11 having lateral support bars 24 and which is supported by pivoted links 16, 17. The link 17 is pivoted to a crank 18 on a driving shaft 19, and the link 16 is pivoted to a fixed frame 15. A rod 20 is slotted at one end and fitted over the shaft 19, is pivoted at the other end to the link 16 and has a roller 21 engaging a cam 22 secured to the shaft 19, so that rotation of the shaft 19 produces the requisite swinging movements to the support plate 12.
