Abstract
1,052,704. Anti-bacterial compositions. STERLING DRUG Inc. Dec. 17, 1964 [Dec. 19, 1963], No. 51452/64. Heading ASE. [Also in Division C5] Stable non-soap cleansing compositions having high anti-bacterial activity comprise aqueous emulsions of up to 20 wt per cent of an alkylphenoxypolyalkylene ether sulphonate and 0.1-1.0 wt. per cent. of a halogenated salicylic acid of formula where x is a halogen and n is 1, 2 or 3, said emulsion having a pH of 5-6, which may be adjusted by acid or base, e.g. HC1 or NaOH. Suitable compounds of said formula are 5-bromosalicylic acid, 3,5-dibromosalicylic acid, and the 3,5-difluoro-, di-chloro-, and di-iodosalicylic acid. The compositions may also contain hexachlorophene, lanolin, petrolatum, methyl cellulose, polyethylene glycol 400 and its monostearate, cocodiethanolamide, and an emulsifier comprising free cholesterol and cholesterol esters.
