Abstract
1,052,575. Polymerized fatty acid polyamides. LAWTER CHEMICALS Inc. April 29, 1965 [May 14, 1964], No. 18114/65. Heading C3R. An alcohol soluble polyamide is derived from propane diamine, a polymerized fatty acid or an amide forming derivative thereof and acetic, lactic, glycolic, formic or hydroxyacetic acid. The propane diamine may be the 1,2- or 1,3- isomer. The polymerized fatty acid may be a dimer or trimer of M.W. about 560 or 840, respectively, derived from soyabean, peanut, cottonseed, wheat, corn, linseed or tall oil and amide-forming derivatives may be methyl or ethyl esters or anhydrides. Ethylene diamine, diethylene triamine, triethylene tetraamine, tetraethylene pentamine, hexamethylene diamine and diamines produced by hydrogenation of nitriles of polymerized fatty acids may be present, the propane diamine being 25-100% of the total diamine and 0À6-0À75 moles of diamine being present per equivalent of polymerized fatty acid. The monocarboxylic acid, e.g. glacial acetic, may be present to the extent of 0À33-0À5 mole per equivalent of polymerized fatty acid. The reaction may be at 135- 225‹ C. in the earlier stages and 150-240‹ C. later. The pressure may be atmospheric or subatmospheric and a N 2 atmosphere may be used. The product which may contain the monocarboxylic acid residues as end-groups may be used in printing inks, as an adhesive for aluminium foil, cellulose xanthate, glass, polyethylene, coating composition and heat sealing compositions.
