Abstract

1,052,550. Stereoregular polypropylene film. HERCULES POWDER CO. June 2, 1965 [June 12, 1964], No. 23476/65. Heading B5B. [Also in Division C3] An elastic polypropylene film is formed by extruding polypropylene at 220‹-290‹ C. into a film, subjecting the film to a melt draw down of # 24: 1, quenching the film at 80‹-110‹C. within #-“ inch from the extrusion die, and heat-treating the film at 130‹-150‹ C. in the relaxed state. The films are of stereoregular polypropylene, capable of at least 80% recovery from an elongation of 75% in the machine direction. The polymer may contain an azido cross-linking agent, e.g. a sulphonazide or azidoformate, there being e.g. 0À1-0À8 moles agent per mole polypropylene. In the Figure (not shown), film extruded from die 3 is quenched by inert liquid 5, e.g. H 2 O, at 80‹- 110‹ C. The film is drawn through the liquid by nip rolls 7 and 8 positively driven at 24-80 times the linear rate of extrusion of film 14 through die 3, thus stretching the film at the molten portion immediately following die 3. From nip rolls 7 and 8 the film passes into a heattreatment oven 9 wherein the film is maintained free of tension at below its softening point. The film passes round idler rolls 10 in the oven, and leaves the oven via nip rolls 11 and 12 driven at the same rate as the inlet nip rolls 7 and 8, and is then wound into rolls.
