Abstract

[Also in Division C3] The invention comprises surface-active polyether acetals of the formula where R is a C 8 -C 18 alkyl or alkenyl group or a mono- or poly-alkyl phenyl group containing 10 to 24 carbon atoms, R<SP>1</SP> is either (a) or (b) -CH(CH 3 )OR<SP>2</SP>, where R<SP>2</SP> is a C 1-8 hydrocarbon group, x has an average value of 5 to 40, and the ratio y/x is from 0À25 to 1À5. Examples of R groups are octyl, hexadecyl. octadecyl, oleyl, dodecenyl, butylphenyl, octylphenyl, nonylphenyl, dodecylphenyl, dinonylphenyl and dodecyl. Examples of R<SP>2</SP> groups are methyl, ethyl, butyl and ethylhexyl. The compounds may be prepared by reacting the alcohol R-(OCH 2 CH 2 ) x -[OCH 2 CH(CH 3 )] y OH with (a) dihydropyran, or (b) the vinyl ether CH 2 =CHOR<SP>2</SP>, respectively, in the presence of an acid catalyst.
