Abstract
1,052,188. Sulphuric acid. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. Sept. 24, 1963 [Sept. 28, 1962; Dec. 14, 1962: Jan. 23, 1963], No. 37473/63. Heading C1A. H 2 SO 4 is produced by the reaction of gases containing SO 2 and O 2 by passing the gases through an aqueous suspension of finely divided active carbon, e.g. from sawdust, peat, pitch coal or granular anthracite, which suspension may contain H 2 SO 4 , at from 30‹ to 90‹ C., the speed of the gases being so adjusted that the suspension is not fluidized. The carbon suspension may contain from 125-500 cm<SP>3</SP>. of active carbon per litre. The suspension of active carbon may be moved countercurrently to the gas stream. The reaction may be carried out in a plurality of successive reaction zones with the H 2 SO 4 concentration of the suspensions of active carbon decreasing from zone to zone, an approximately constant water vapour pressure being maintained in each zone, and by varying the temperature in dependence on the acid concentration in the individual zones. The active carbon used may have a ratio of micropore volume to macropore volume of from 3: 1 to 7: 1 and a mean pore radius of. less than 40 Š and preferably from 10 to 20 Š. The active carbon may have a mean grain size of 30 microns.
