Abstract
<PICT:1051764/C4-C5/1> Acetylene is recovered from thermal or electrical cracking processes (with or without oxygen) by washing with an acetylene solvent in a preliminary stage to obtain a preliminary wash liquor and a gas which is washed with a larger amount of solvent under pressure to obtain a main wash liquor, expelling acetylene from the main wash liquor and purifying the acetylene by countercurrent contact with the main wash liquor, removing from the main wash liquor a mixture of compounds more soluble than acetylene by means of steam and/or solvent vapour and contacting the resultant mixture with the preliminary wash liquor. Solvents mentioned are aqueous butyrolactone and N-methylpyrrolidone. Gas in line 1 is washed in tower 2 with solvent from line 3 and the gas in line 4 is compressed and washed in main wash tower 6 with solvent from line 7. Liquor in line 9 is passed through stripper 10 and then into degassing tower 12. Released gases pass into the base of stripper 10. Some acetylene leaves by line 14 and is recycled to tower 6 and pure acetylene is recovered by line 15. More soluble gases with water and solvent vapour are obtained from tower 12 by line 16 and enter the base of column 17 to the top of which is passed preliminary wash liquor in line 29. Gases in line 18 are water washed in tower 19 to recover solvent which is returned by line 22 to tower 12. Stripped solvent from column 17 is partly returned to tower 2 and partly fractionated in column 25 to recover solvent in line 27, polymers being removed by line 28.
