Abstract

[Also in Division E1] Articles are formed by applying a layer of powdered plastics material to a continuous heat conductive mould, heating the mould to completely fuse the layer, and subsequently cooling and removing the thus-formed layer. In one embodiment (not claimed), flat plates, e.g. tiles, are formed by applying powder to a mould 1, the side walls of which are adapted to carry bars 2a-2n from which reinforcements 3a-3n are suspended. The thickness of the tile is increased at the regions of the reinforcements, to ensure good anchoring thereof, by providing the mould bottom with recesses 1a-1n. Reinforcements having a higher melting point than the moulding material, e.g. metal ore, introduced before the powder is applied to the mould, whereas reinforcements of a lower melting point, e.g. plastics, are introduced after the moulding material has been melted, said reinforcements thus being actually fused to the finished tile. In the claimed embodiment powder is sprinkled from hopper 24 on to a moving continuous mould, formed by a steel belt 22 and side plates 23a-23n, and melted, under a heat insulating hood 32 by burners 25. The fused sheet thus formed is then cooled by air from head 27 and led to a take-off table 31 whence it is divided into lengths. Facilities may be provided to apply reinforcements to the sheet as in the not-claimed embodiment described above.
