Abstract
1,050,651. Coating apparatus. ALPERTON CARTON CO. Ltd. March 19, 1965 [Jan. 14, 1964; March 20, 1964], Nos. 1571/64 and 12003/64. Heading B2L. Apparatus for applying fusible material, e.g. wax, to a surface or surfaces of a sheet comprises means for feeding said sheet, through the nip of two rollers 4, 5 of which one at least, in use, is heated to a temperature not lower than the melting point of said material and has a part of its surface in contact with a supply of the material in a molten state and forms a reservoir between the roller surface and the upper face of a downwardly inclined metering blade 23 which @ade determines the thickness of a layer of molten material carried on the roller surface to the sheet. The gap between blade 23 and the associated roller is adjustable along its length by inter-digitated sets of screws (Fig. 4 of Provisional drawings 12003/64, not shown) and to coat both surfaces of the sheet, both rollers may be provided with reservoirs formed by metering blades in association therewith. If it is desired to coat parts only of the sheet surface, adjustable scraper blades can be associated with the metering blade to remove the material from the appropriate part of the roller surface. The roller (or rollers) is maintained at the required temperature by circulation of heated fluid therethrough and the blade 23 is mounted on a block 70 through which the heated fluid may also be circulated. The block 70 is mounted on a lever 74 and is adjustable in position by pneumatic means 73. Liquid wax is pumped to the reservoirs from tank 30 (Fig. 2 of Provisional drawings 1571/64, not shown), which has a first heater element 32 disposed at a level below the normal liquid level and a second heater element 33 adapted to support a block of solid material at a level above said normal level.
