Abstract
1,050,297. Gripping devices for lifting stacked articles. A. J. STOLTZ. April 21, 1964 [April 26, 1963; June 5, 1963], No. 16399/64. Heading B8H. To lift a stack of articles, e.g. bricks 15, Fig. 1, a lifting device comprising walls 2, 3, 4 is lowered over the stack and the bottom layer 19 is clamped to the bottom 6 of the wall 2 by a beam 8 moved by rams 18. The beam 8 may be provided with blocks 23, Fig. 2, faced with resilient pads 24 and backed by inflated hoses 27. Pads may be provided across the lower regions of the wall 2. Alternatively pneumatic or hydraulic hoses may be provided with pads or pads and/or blocks may be separately operated by hydraulic cylinders or mounted on springs or vacuum diaphragm means or air or hydraulic cylinders. Fig. 5 shows an embodiment with two movable beams 8. Fig. 7 shows an intermediate beam 8a and the device is slidably mounted on a cradle 31 and moved by a ram 34. With this arrangement two stacks of bricks can be picked up, carried one on top of the other and put down at the same or different places. By pivoting about lugs 32 the device can be transported in a horizontal position. In Fig. 11 walls 35 are attached to arms 40 pivoted together at 38 and moved by rams 18. The walls 35 may be partly or completely covered by resilient loadengaging members. End walls 42, which may overlap, may be provided.
