1,050,084. Preventing erosion in moving bed apparatus; catalysts. MOBIL OIL CORPORATION. June 24, 1963, No. 25030/63. Headings BIE and B1F. [Also in Division C5] Erosion of apparatus by a moving bed of refractory particles is reduced by admixing with the particles a minor proportion of barytes having an average diameter of less than 30 microns. The barytes particles preferably have an average diameter between 0.5 and 20Á and be added in amounts 0.05 and 5% wt.; particulate siliceous material being the preferred bed material. The barytes may be added continuously or intermittently to the moving bed. In a catalytic hydrocarbon cracking process, the barytes may be added to the fresh or regenerated siliceous catalyst, the feed stream or the catalyst before regeneration. The barytes may be added dry or in an aqueous or hydrocarbon dispersion. The catalyst compositions disclosed are (a) 90% SiO 2 , 10% Al 2 O 3 as #" dia. beads rolled in barytes powder having average size 11-13Á to give 0.5% barytes on the catalyst; (b) 39% SiO 2 , 30% Al 2 O 3 , 25% clay with 1% barytes added, (c) 60% SiO 2 , 40%, as #" dia. beads with 0.5% barytes thereon.
