Abstract

1,049,539. Colouring margarine &c. KALAMAZOO SPICE EXTRACTION CO. Oct. 28, 1964, No. 43570/64. Heading A2B. Oleomargarine, butter, lard, salad oils, cooking oils and other edible oils and fats are coloured with a stable colouring composition comprising normally unstable bixin and curcumin, the ratio of curcumin to bixin being in the ratio 1 : 3.3 to 3 : 1, the pigments having a mean particle size of not more than 15 microns. A typical margarine which may be coloured is made from cottonseed oil, milk solids and water. The colouring composition may be in the form of a suspension of the pigments in an edible oil. The bixin and curcumin may be extracted by means of an organic solvent from annatto seeds and turmeric respectively, transferred to an edible oil, and ground in the oil.
