Abstract
An aqueous composition which upon dilution with water above or in combination with soap or a synthetic detergent may be used for bleaching cotton, wool or nylon comprises hydrogen peroxide, a hydrogen peroxide stabiliser, e.g. dipicolinic acid or sodium stannate, an optical brightening agent, e.g. a stilbene or thiophen derivative, and a water-soluble or water-dispersible organic polymeric thickening agent, e.g. a carboxylic vinyl polymer, a carboxymethyl cellulose or a polyethylene oxide condensate. The composition which preferably has a pH of 4-8 may contain about 5.5% by weight of hydrogen peroxides (calculated as 100% hydrogen peroxide), 0.05-5% by weight of sodium stannate, 0.5-1% by weight of the optical brightening agent, 0.1-5% by weight of the organic polymeric thickening agent and 0.001-0.1% by weight of a colouring agent, e.g.a phthalocyanine derivative. Hydrogen peroxide per se is preferably used although it may be wholly or partly formed in situ from, for example, urea perhydrate. The composition which is particularly suitable for packaging in a plastic squeeze container may be prepared by mixing the organic polymeric thickening agent, optical brightening agent, stabiliser and colouring agent when used with a portion of L the total water required and combining the resultant mix with the remaining constituents.
