Abstract
Alkyl aromatic compounds are hydrodealkylated by heating with hydrogen up to a temperature of 510 DEG C. in less than 50 seconds, preferably 1 to 10 seconds, and then raising the temperature to 621 DEG to 677 DEG C., thereafter maintaining the temperature at 621 DEG to 982 DEG C. for 1 to 400 seconds at a pressure of at least 7 kg. cm.2 gauge. Starting materials used include toluene, xylenes, trimethylbenzenes, alkyl naphthalenes and alkyl phenols. The molar ratio of hydrogen to alkyl aromatic charge may be 1.5: 1 to 20: 1.
