Abstract
1,048,152. Hydraulic turbines; centrifugal pumps. DOMINION ENGINEERING WORKS Ltd. May 1, 1964 [June 10, 1963], No. 18147/64. Headings F1C and FIT. Leakage preventing means in an hydraulic turbine, pump or reversible pump-turbine including a rotary member mounted for rotation relative to a static member, consists in supplying fluid of relatively low density, which may be air, to an annular space formed between the two members and preventing this fluid from escaping from the annular space by forming two zones of restricted clearance between the two members and bounding the annular space, and supplying a relatively high density fluid, which may be water, to at least one of the zones of restricted clearance to form a fluid seal therein. Air is supplied to an annular space 18 surrounding the runner 13 of a Francis turbine. The lower zone of restricted clearance is formed by the co-operation of the runner band 29, the stator 19, rings 20 and 34, and base ring 32. The inner surface 21 of the stator is provided with an annular groove 26 to which water is supplied through duct 24. It is stated that a standing water seal is formed in the outer region of the annular gap 25 between rings 34 and 20. Several modifications, Figs. 3-7 (not shown), of the zone of restricted clearance include runner bands, stators and associated rings of slightly different shapes to provide zones of restricted clearance of varying configurations to each of which water is supplied in a manner similar to that illustrated in Fig. 2.
