Control of the gas pressure inside an electric arc furnace 1, and hence the rate of fume and dust removed through the furnace flue 8, is effected by a sensing device 29 inside the furnace, which device, through a regulator 28 and motor 27, makes appropriate adjustments to the air gap between the furnace flue 8 and the exhaust hood 11 to maintain the pressure constant for a particular setting of the regulator, the latter being manually adjusted to the appropriate pressure for whichever phase of the process is taking place in the furnace. The probe acts through the regulator 28 to control operation of the reversible motor 27 which rotates a vertical screw 23 to raise or lower a bracket 15 carrying a conduit 12 at the end of which is the hood 11. The conduit 12 connects with the exhaust flue 20 by a telescopic joint. The bracket 15 and hence the conduit 12 are also pivotable about a vertical axis 20 so that they may be moved aside when the furnace is to be recharged. The horizontal part of the conduit 12 may be made telescopic to enable the suction hood 11 to be positioned over a ladle into which the contents of the furnace are being discharged. Alternatively the two working positions for the hood 11 may be arranged at the same radius from the pivot axis 20<SP>1</SP> (Fig. 7, not shown).
