Abstract

1,047,303. Charging batteries from variablespeed generators. J. STONE & CO. (DEPTFORD) Ltd. June 17, 1965 [June 19, 1964], No. 25539/64. Heading H2H. Battery-charging apparatus of the kind in which a battery 5 is charged by an A.C. generator 1 driven by a prime mover which can run at different speeds selectable by the main contacts (not shown) of a relay 9 comprises auxiliary contacts 10 on the relay which are operated such as to insert the resistance 11 into circuit when a high prime mover speed, and hence high generator voltage, is chosen so as to maintain the voltage applied to the battery approximately the same as that when a low prime mover speed is selected. Alternatively the battery voltage may be maintained by using the contacts 10 to control the saturation of a saturable reactor inserted into the circuit between the alternator 1 and the rectifier 6. The alternator may have a permanent magnet excitation and the system may be three phase.
