Abstract
1,047,395. Batteries. ELECTRIC STORAGE BATTERY CO. July 17, 1963 [July 18, 1962], No. 28350/63. Heading H1B. [Also in Division C7] A thixotropic slurry, formed by mixing powdered active material with an aqueous solution containing from a trace to 50% by weight of a soluble polymeric material in free carboxylic acid form, is applied to a support and dried to produce an electrode. The soluble polymeric carboxylic acid acts as a binder and may be one of the following: polyacrylic acid; polymethylacrylic acid; a maleic copolymer of styrene or ethylene; or a vinyl ester or a vinyl ether copolymer with maleic or crotonic acid. The active material may be one of the following: zinc, zinc oxide, cadmium, cadmium oxide, a lead oxide, nickel hydrate, silver or silver oxide. In one specific example a slurry comprising an aqueous solution of a polymethacrylic acid, silver powder and finely divided polyethylene fines was deposited on a silver support and dried at 100‹ C. for ten minutes. The electrode so formed was then placed in an oven for thirty minutes at 600‹ C. to remove the binder and polyethylene fines and sinter the silver. For best results with pasted electrodes of zinc, zinc oxide, cadmium, cadmium oxide, lead oxides or nickel hydrate a 2-5% aqueous solution of polymeric carboxylic acid was used.
