Abstract
1,047,152. Controlling reactors. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Jan. 14, 1965 [Jan. 8, 1964], No. 824/64. Heading G6C. In a nuclear reactor safety system, control rods are urged into the core in response to measurements of neutron flux density. The system operates for both rising and falling flux values. In the former case operation can occur when the flux reaches a specified value and in the latter case when a predetermined difference between the instantaneous flux value and a reference value is reached. Operation in each case is effected only if the conditions occur simultaneously with a flux rate of change greater than a specified value. The system is rendered non-operative during specified small variations of flux and during a rapid decrease in reactor power which is dealt with by the normal control rod arrangement. The control rod error signals are provided by potentiometers, the tappings of which are adjusted by a servo motor or clockwork unit in accordance with the output from an error signal generator supplied with input from the flux measuring devices and a second from a feed back potentiometer, operated by the servo motor to provide both the predetermined operating values and the required time differential factor. Time lags are introduced by a magnetic brake.
