Abstract

1,046,305. Automatic control of reactive power. BROWN, BOVERI & CO. Ltd. April 7, 1965 [April 9, 1964], No.14840/65. Heading G3R. In an induction furnace, starting-up is accomplished by initially switching on at a low voltage which is then raised to a higher voltage for full operation, and compensation for the reactive power taken by the furnace is effected in two stages. Initially, and below a pre-determined voltage, a coarse control is effected by the connection or disconnection of large capacitor units; above this voltage, and when the coarse stage has been completed a fine control is effected by the connection or disconnection of small capacitor units. The embodiment described with reference to the drawing (not shown) accompanying the Specification includes relays for controlling a motor-operated rotary transformer supplying the furnace and for controlling the switching of the capacitors, the relays being associated with reactive power measuring apparatus, a real power regulator, a voltmeter, and an ammeter which responds when a maximum permissible current limit is exceeded to prevent a further voltage rise in the furnace.
