Measuring magnitudes represented as angular positions are coded by an encoding disc, converted into " 1 out of 10 " code, converted into teleprinter code by means of a diode matrix, the bits then being serialized with the addition of start and stop pulses. The code may be cyclictetradic (Fig. 2a, not shown), or a simplified version of this (Fig. 2b or 2c, not shown) when the lowest order digit need only be correct to 2 or 5. Signals from photodiodes sensing the encoding disc are converted to " 1 out of 10 " code by diode matrices, a circuit such as in Fig. 4 (not shown) being provided for each decade. Ambiguity within a given decade arising with the cyclic-tetradic code is resolved by gating circuits controlled from the next higher decade, these gating circuits also providing a similar controlling signal (indicating whether the decimal digit is even or odd) to the next lower decade circuit. Encoding discs driven from a clock provide time signals in teleprinter code and these together with teleprinter control signals are transmitted together with the measuring data to a printer or tape punch.
