Abstract

1,046,123. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. ETHICON Inc. July 31, 1963 [July 31, 1962], No. 30388/63. Heading B5K. [Also in Division A3] A disposable medical examining glove sealed at the edges thereof to form a smooth edge seam is supported by, and adheres to, a sheet of crepe paper. Two webs of plastics material together with a web of crepe paper are fed from supply rollers to a stamping station where they pass beneath a cutting and sealing assembly 38 and over a backing plate assembly 36, the gloves being cut out and heat sealed without cutting or charring the crepe paper. The sealing assembly comprises a die 80 in the shape of a glove secured to a plate beneath and in contact with an aluminium block 90 which is water cooled. The die is raised and lowered by pneumatic or other means. A roller 102 impregnated with grease wipes the cutting edges of the die 80 after each operation. The roller may be operated by air motors 104. To heat the die electric leads 110, 112 are attached to the ends of the die. The backing plate assembly 36 comprises a resilient pad 118 on an element 116 adjustably supported by posts 124 on a plate 120 on a rigid foundation.
