Abstract
1,046,071. Rotary-piston I.C. engines. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. Jan. 7, 1964 [Jan. 11, 1963], No. 750/64. Heading F1F. In a rotary-piston I.C. engine of the n and n+l lobe type, a stationary outer body or stator containing a piston or rotor 2 (Figs. 1 and 2, not shown) comprises a pair of end covers 7, 8 separated from one another by a plurality, e.g. five, of axially-orientated bracing members or distance pieces 9 ... 13 attached thereto by bolts or studs 14, combustionchamber heads 16 ... 20 being fixed to pairs of adjacent bracing members by bolts 15 so as to facilitate construction of the stator and maintenance of valves lodged in each head. Cooling- water passages are provided in the stator, the water entering an inlet passage 21 to flow through the head 16, the end cover 8, the heads 17, 18, 20 in parallel, the end cover 7 and the head 19 before it is ejected through an outlet passage 22. A pair of cooling-water passages 31 are provided in each bracing member which communicate with the passages in the adjacent head and the end cover 7. Alternatively, the stator is cooled by air (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown), atmospheric air being propelled through an annular conduit 30 and between cooling fins 23 on the combustion-chamber heads by a fan 24. The air also passes through the bracing members by way of orifices 25, 26 in the end covers 7, 8. Cooling fins 27, 28 are also provided on the end covers.
