An inhaler comprises a casing 10 with an air passage and mouth-nose mask 14, means for negatively ionising air being disposed in the passage, the means comprising a cathode 17 connected to a high voltage generator in the casing and an anode 19 so placed that ionised air is not neutralized thereby before passing to the mask on inspiration of the user. The casing has a conductive covering connected to the positive pole of the high voltage generator. Inspiration air enters the out passage through a screen 16 of insulating material and passes over the anode and cathode which comprises a sharp part. Medicament in a porous cushion 21 may be entrained in the airstream. Alternatively, medicated vapour may be supplied to the passage through a nozzle (Fig. 4, not shown) of insulating material, the cathode being in the form of a needle extending through and coaxial with the nozzle. Medicated vapour may be supplied through a hollow conducting needle (Fig. 3, not shown) which is connected to the cathode. A device indicating the ionisation of the air may be provided. The anode and cathode are connected through a system of rectifiers and multivibrators to a mains A.C. supply or a battery, the voltage applied to the cathode being about 1200 volts.
