Abstract

Constructional elements comprise at least two rigid sheets, e.g. of metal, plastics or compressed film, at least one of which is formed with regularly arranged dimples or channels to or between which the other sheet is secured, and at least one sheet is subjected by an applied force to stress before or after such securing, the applied force being subsequently released. For example a metal sheet having truncated squaresection dimples is stretched between jaws applied to its opposite edges, and while so stretched is welded, riveted or otherwise secured to corresponding dimples in a similar but unstretched sheet, which, on release of the first sheet, is subjected to compression by the latter's contraction. The product, when supported with the stretched sheet uppermost, is stated to be capable of bearing greater loads or spanning longer distances. One of the sheets may be part of a building structure. An intermediate flat sheet may be secured between the dimpled sheets. Pre-stressing may be effected by securing to a sheet bars, rods, strips &c. prestressed in tension or compression and subsequently released, or by applying a layer of concrete containing prestressed elements.
