Abstract
A polyurethane suitable for the manufacture of foams and films ia prepared by reacting in the presence of dimethyl formamide as catalyst an organic diisocyanate with a surfactant having alternately connected hydrophobic and hydrophilic portions wherein each hydrophobic portion has at least one hydrophilic portion connected to it, each hydrophilic portion comprising an ethylene oxide chain terminating in an hydroxyl group and each being individually linked to a hydrophobic portion, the proportions of the reactants being such that the final product when cured to a foam or cast in a film has an ethylene oxide content of 30 to 80% by weight. The hydrophobic portion may be a propylene oxide polymer, ethylene diamine to which 1:2 propylene oxide has been added, alkylphosphate, alkyl amide, dicarboxy fatty acid alkyl, and dihydroxy fatty acid alkyl. The surfactant may be an Ethomid (an NN substituted fatty acid amide, the substituents being polyoxyethylene groups), a "Pluronic" (R.T.M.) made by condensing ethylene oxide with a hydrophobic base formed by the condensation of 1:2-propylene oxide and propylene glycol, and "Tetronic" (R.T.M.) which is similar to "Pluronics" except the initial material is ethylene diamine. A dihydric alcohol, e.g. butene-1,4-diol or polyoxypropylene glycol, may be added to the reaction mixture to increase the tear resistance of the final product. In a typical Example (1) Ethomid HT/60 was reacted with tolylene diisocyanate for about 1 hour at 110 DEG C., cooled and more tolylene diisocyanate together with dimethyl formamide and Ethomid HT/60 are added. To the prepolymer thus prepared water was added and the foam cured at 70 DEG C.
