Abstract

[Also in Division H3] In the production of printing blocks from single coloured or multi-coloured picture or text originals by photo-electrically scanning the originals and removing material from the surface of the blocks under control of the scanning, the material is evaporated from the surface by a very highly bunched monochromatic bundle of light rays of high power density, particularly a laser beam, focused on the surface and modulated by the photo-cell signals. The process is applicable to the making of relief or preferably intaglio printing blocks with or without screening. In one embodiment for making a screened block, Fig. 1, an exchangeable cylinder 3 rotated by motor 1 carries the original 4 and the printing block material 5. The original and the block may be on separate synchronized machines. Scanning is effected by a point light source 6 focused by lens 7 and the reflection is passed through lens 8 to a photo-cell 9 whose signals amplified at 10 control a Kerr cell 11 in the path of a laser beam emitted from a laser crystal 17. This may be a synthetic ruby doped with chromium ions or of fluorspar doped with samarium or uranium ions. The Kerr cell thus modulates the lightintensity from the laser which is focused on the block material 5 by lens 14. Crystal 17 and a cylindrical flashlamp 16 are mounted on the focal lines of an elliptical mirrored chamber 15. The xenon flashlamp 16 is fed with constant pulses at the same frequency -as the screening from a high voltage generator 18 and a scanning stage 26 controlled through an amplifier 25 by a photocell 24 receiving light pulses from source 21 through a disc 19 on the motor shaft, having alternate opaque and transparent sections 20. In another embodiment. Fig. 2 (not shown), the laser beam has pulses of a constant amplitude and variable duration. The scanning signals from photo-cell 9 are fed to a scanner 27 which receives constant duration pulses from disc 19 and photo-cell 24. The variable amplitude pulses are transformed at 28 into time modulated pulses of constant amplitude. The laser crystal may be cooled with liquid air and the printing cylinder may also be cooled. Alternatively a gas laser may be used particularly for continuous emission processes. A plurality of scanning devices and lasers may be used.
