Abstract

1,044,027. Hearing aids. AMPLIVOX Ltd. Aug. 10, 1964 [May 10, 1963], No. 18559/63. Heading H4J. A hearing aid has an elongate casing adapted to fit behind the ear with a forwardly facing surface 22 at or near one end of the casing projecting above the ear, a microphone 19 and sound reproducer 20 being disposed adjacent that end of the casing and arranged respectively to receive sound through at least one opening 23 (Fig. 3, not shown) in the surface 22 and to transmit sound into the ear through an acoustic duet 26. The apertured forwardly facing surface 22 is such that the aid is appreciably more sensitive to sound being received from the direction in which the user is looking than to sound received from any other direction. The aid comprises a two-part plastics casing, the two parts being held together by screws 12, 13. The parts are formed with integral webs 14 to divide the casing into two non-communicating compartments. A component assembly 15 is provided, together with a volume control 16 and a swing-out battery container 17. A movable baffle 18 of low reluctance material provides two compartments housing the microphone 19 and reproducer 20 respectively. Magnetic feedback is reduced by the baffle 18 and by appropriate orientation of the two units 19, 20. Acoustic feedback is reduced by suspending the units in anti - vibration mountings. Preferably two acoustic openings 23 are connected by a tube 24 to the microphone 19. One opening may be plugged to provide bass cut and the other may be plugged to reduce gain. A forwardly extending part 25 is connected to duct 26 by a joint which permits slight angular adjustment. A sleeve 27 connects duct 26 to the orifice of the reproducer 20. A flexible plastics tube (not shown) with a perforated ear plug in its end is attached to the duct 26. The hearing aid casing can be used as the ear-piece of a side arm of a pair of spectacles and the duct conveying sound to the ear may consist in part of a passage in the side arm.
