Abstract
1,043,866. Vibration dampers; universal joints. C. CAMOSSI. Sept. 18, 1963 [March 9, 1963; May 17, 1963; May 18, 1963; July 16, 1963], No. 36663/63. Headings F2S and F2U. A device for transmitting torque, with damping of vibrations comprises at least one length of stranded and twisted cable constrained at its ends to means relatively movable to apply torque by a force applied at one end of the length at right-angles to and intersecting the axial length of the cable, and capable of twisting about its own axis to sustain torsional stresses about that axis. The invention may be applied to a universal joint, Fig. 9, in which two cables 20, 20<SP>1</SP> are mounted in a block at an angle to each other. The ends of the cables are secured in sleeves (Fig. 4, not shown), and then secured in further sleeves 25, 28 (not shown), which form part of forks 26, 29. Rotary motion is transferred through coupling sleeves 27A, 30. The cables are anchored at their intersection by deforming the block about the cables or compressing plugs through apertures in the block on to the cables (Figs. 6, 7, not shown). Several separate joints and combinations of these joints having single cables or two cables in parallel are disclosed with reference to Figs. 10 to 18 (not shown), the cable ends being held in the fork members by nut-andscrew assemblies. 7
