<PICT:1043177/C4-C5/1> A process of producing coke comprises forming into shapes with a binder a body of particles of coal which is either a bituminous coal of marginal coking type, or a mixture of semi-anthracite and a low volatile bituminous coal, or a mixture of semi-anthracite and a medium volatile bituminous coal, arranging said shapes in a column comprising an upper carbonizing zone and a lower cooling zone in a vertically disposed chamber, effecting combustion of a carbonizing gas at the base of said carbonizing zone within said chamber for circulation of gaseous combustion products upwardly through said carbonizing zone, withdrawing said combustion gases from the top of said carbonizing zone, removing tar products from said gases, cooling said gases, and recirculating a portion thereof to said chamber at the base of said cooling zone for circulation upwardly through the coked shapes in said cooling zone to cool said shapes. The body of coal particles is preferably a blend of 20-75% bituminous, 80-25% semi-anthracite coal, and is agglomerated with a carbonaceous binder such as asphalt, coal tar or other coking by-product, or with bentonite, lignosulphonate, sodium silicate, dextrin or ferrous sulphate. The combustion gases are maintained at 2000-2400 DEG F. Coking chamber 10 comprises carbonization and cooling zones 16, 17 and radially directed burners 14 intermediate the zones, supplied with gas and air through 18, 19. Raw shapes fed by hopper 22 pass downwardly through 16, 17, coke product being discharged to bin 32. Cooling gas is supplied to 17 by manifold 26 with outlet 28, and the gaseous effluent from 16 is withdrawn at 30, successively de-tarred and cooled in 37-41 and recirculated to burners 14 and manifold 26. Metallurgical coke produced contained 1% moisture, 1% volatile matter, 9.5% ash, 88.5% fixed carbon.
