Abstract
A process for the regeneration of a sulfur-contaminated catalyst comprising an alumina-containing carrier material and at least one metallic component selected from the metals and compounds of Group VI-A and VIII of the Periodic Table is characterized in that the catalyst is contacted at an inlet temperature up to 371 DEG C. with a circulating stream of regenerating gas containing free oxygen in an amount which produces a first burning wave in the catalyst bed with a maximum temperature increase of 111 DEG C., oxides of sulfur are removed from the effluent regenerating gas and the purified regenerating gas is re-cycled, after said first burning wave has passed through the catalyst bed the inlet temperature is increased to a higher level substantially within the range of from 371 to 454 DEG C., a second burning wave is allowed to pass with a maximum temperature increase of 111 DEG C. through the catalyst bed while the circulation of the regenerating gas is continued and oxides of sulfur are continuously removed therefrom, thereafter the inlet temperature is increased to above 538 DEG C. and the concentration of free oxygen within the regenerating gas is increased while the circulation of the regenerating gas is continued at the increased inlet temperature. The catalyst may consist of Ni on SiO2/Al2O3, Ni and Mo on SiO2/Al2O3, Ni, Mo and Co on SiO2/Al2O3, Pt on SiO2/Al2O3 and Ni on Al2O3 alone. The catalyst carrier may include naturally occurring earths, clays, sands and ores.
