Abstract
1,042,776. Moulding containers. HAVEG INDUSTRIES Inc. July 1, 1964 [July 2, 1963], No. 27089/64. Heading B5A. A shrink resistant liquid container, e.g. a cup, is formed by vacuum or blow-moulding a sheet of thermoplastic foamed material at a temperature of at least 205‹ F. and below the temperature at which the material loses its foamed structure. A rim, which may be headed, is simultaneously compression moulded on to the cup. The sheet may comprise a foamed core between 2 non-foamed skins, or may consist solely of foamed material. A heat-softened sheet 2 is vacuum moulded in a female die 6 aided by a plunger 8, the plunger carrying a ring 18 which compression moulds the rim on the cup. The bottom of the cup is also compression moulded, the transference of the sheet to the female die, before full closure of the mould and the compression moulding of the rim and bottom, being assisted by compressed air through channel 48 in the plunger. The sheet may be blow-moulded without the use of vacuum. A bead may be formed on the rim by providing a suitable groove around the mouth of the female die (Fig. 2, not shown).
