Abstract
A process of applying a surface of polytetrafluoroethylene to a base material comprises first forming on the base a coating of a porous ceramic "ground coat" then applying the PTFE to the porous surface, without any intermediate treatment of the surface to affect its porosity. The base may be metal, e.g. ferrous metal or pottery. It may be cleaned, shot-blasted or etched; the ceramic frit is then sprayed on, dried and fired, and an aqueous dispersion of PTFE is then sprayed on, dried and sintered at 350-400 DEG C. The process is applicable to frying pans, saucepans, bearings, and fluid-control valves. A suitable frit comprises 25% ground glass, 30% quartz, 10% of the "No. 15 Compound" of Messrs. Ferro Enamels Ltd., 5% clay and 30% water, ground to pass 200 mesh.ALSO:A process of applying a surface of polytetrafluoroethylene to a base material comprises first forming on the base a coating of a porous ceramic "ground coat" including free quartz then applying the PTFE to the porous surface, without any intermediate treatment of the surface to affect its porosity. The base may be metal, e.g. ferrous metal or pottery. It may be cleaned, shot-blasted or etched: the ceramic frit is then sprayed on, dried and fired, and an aqueous dispersion of PTFE is then sprayed on, dried and sintered at 350-400 DEG C. The process is applicable to frying pans, saucepans, bearings, and fluid-control valves.
