Abstract

A gas filter comprises a layer of woven or felted glass fibre filter medium enclosed between two concentric pervious supporting cylinders (10, 11), the cylinders and medium being sealed to end caps (12, 13) by silicone rubber which is either poured in or applied by dipping. Cylinders (10, 11) may be foamed plastics or sintered or perforated metal or plastics. As illustrated, the outer cylinder is formed flat and wrapped round the medium, and an axially slidable metal clip (15) is fitted over its outwardly turned flanges (16). The filter medium is either a single layer or a multi-layer material comprising alternate layers of filter material and reinforcing material, and is wrapped three times round inner cylinder (11) before fitting outer cylinder (10). Finally, after sealing the end caps in place, a removable pre-filter sock or sleeve (20) of foamed rubber or polyurethane is fitted over cylinder 10. End cap 13 has a screwed coupling for connecting the filter to an autoclave, and the coupling aperture limits the gas flow to prevent excessive pressure drop across the filter medium.
