Abstract

A method of treating a ferrous surface comprises forming a zinc phosphate coating thereon and then making the coated surface a cathode in a zinc phosphate solution so that zinc is deposited thereupon. The phosphate coating may be formed by dipping in a zinc phosphate bath, e.g. suspended from an electrically conducting support so that current may be switched on through the support and both processes carried out in the same bath; or by spraying with zinc phosphate solution and subsequently dipping the ferrous article in the reservoir of the spray solution where it is brought into contact with an electrical conductor, thereby effecting the deposition of the zinc. The phosphate solution may contain 0.5-3.0% w/v phosphate, calculated as PO4, and have a free phosphoric acid content of 0.3 to 0.8%. Electrolytic deposition of the zinc preferably takes place at a temperature of 70 DEG -160 DEG F. and using a current density of below 30 Amps/sq. ft., preferably 5-15 Amps/sq. ft.
