Abstract

A process for the treatment of stainless ferritic sheet or strip material containing 14-20% by weight of chromium, comprises cold rolling and annealing the cold rolled material at a sufficient temperature and for a sufficient time as to ensure the formation of small amounts of transformation structure within the ferrite material. During annealing at a suitable temperature, usually in the range 850 DEG -930 DEG C., small portions of austenite are formed within the material, which form transformation structures on cooling, the presence of which has a similar effect on the yield point elongation of the material as does a small degree of cold re-rolling and so dispenses with the latter treatment. In an example given the time of annealing is 1 1/2 minutes.
