1,041,553. Cigarette-making machines. MOLINS ORGANISATION Ltd., and D. W. MOLINS. Sept. 6, 1962 [Sept. 7, 1961], No. 32115/61. Heading A2C. In a continuous rod cigarette-making machine as described in Specification 1,041,551 and 1,041,552 the continuous tobacco stream formed on the second conveyer band is compressed, and means are provided to detect variations in the air permeability of the compressed stream, which means controls a trimming device which removes surplus tobacco from the stream, the stream being subsequently wrapped. The continuous tobacco stream formed on the air-pervious band 13 is compressed by a rotatable paddle wheel 33 fitted with yieldable paddles 34 arranged tangentially from its boss 35 and moving at the peripheral speed as the air-pervious band 13; alternatively the tobacco stream may be compressed by an endless conveyer band, spring-loaded to press against it (Fig. 3 not shown). Surplus tobacco is then removed from the compressed stream by trimming discs 24, 25 mounted on vertically sliding spindles 26, 27 to vary their distance from the band 13 and accordingly the amount of tobacco trimmed from the stream. To this end an air cell 28, connected to suction via a pipe 29 and located within the suction chamber 20 drawing air through the band, measures the air permeability of the compressed tobacco stream and communicates via a duct 30 with a control unit and hydraulic amplifier of the type disclosed in Specification 929,338 which operates to raise or lower the discs 24, 25 accordingly, and ensures that the tobacco stream contains a substantially constant quantity of tobacco per unit of time.
