In an automatic coffee making apparatus, a three stage operation is controlled by movements of a piston 7 in a hydraulic cylinder 6. On actuation of the start button manually or by means of a coin-freed mechanism, coffee grounds are dispensed from hopper 9 into a container 2 having a removable strainer 3. Piston 7 is then set in motion by connecting pipe 19 to the hydraulic fluid supply, which may be the water main, and container 2 is moved into housing 1. Covers 4, 5 are mounted on parallelogram linkages 27 and are maintained sufficiently far apart by compression springs 31 for the container 2 to move freely between them until its supporting yoke 16 touches the end flanges of the covers adjacent springs 31. Continued motion of the piston draws the covers 4, 5 rearwardly and inwardly to clamp the container 2 between them and to seal the upper cover 4 against the sealing ring 37. The piston 7 stops when the limbs 27 are vertical and water flows from a water boiler through pipe 32 to prepare the beverage which flows from hole 34. On completion of this step, the piston is set in motion in the reverse direction to effect unclamping of the container 2 and its reappearance from housing 1. The container is moved a little beyond the hopper 9 and is simultaneously inverted by engagement of helical grooves 23 with bolts 24 so that the used grounds may be washed out by water spray 10. The hydraulic fluid supply to pipe 18 is then cut off and compression spring 26 returns the piston to the position shown in Fig. 1. In a modification (Figs. 7 and 8, not shown) the linkages 27 are replaced by a pin and slot arrangement.
