Abstract
1,041,005. Heating air by waste gases; ventilating vehicles. VOLKSWAGENWERK A.G. Jan. 22, 1965 [Jan. 28, 1964], No. 3035/65. Headings F4S and F4V. A motor vehicle fresh air heating arrangement comprises a heat exchanger 3 within which exhaust gases from juxtaposed cylinders 6, 7 of an internal-combustion engine 1 are conveyed by bends 8, 9 and from which the gases from the two cylinders are separately conveyed by a centrally disposed, laterally extending pipe 13, whilst fresh air is supplied by a fan or blower 2 to the heat exchanger inlet 16. Heated air passes out of the heat exchanger through an outlet 17. As shown, the exhaust gases are conveyed through finned metal castings 4, 8, 9 to the pipe 13 which has a central partition so that the gas paths are completely separate as far as a silencer 12. The temperature of air leaving the outlet 17 is maintained constant by a thermostatically operated valve 19 which allows unheated air to pass through a pipe 22 directly to the outlet 17 where it mixes with and modifies the temperature of the heated air.
