Abstract
The weft thread passes through eyes in the ends of a series of leyers, alternate ones being rocked in one direction transversely to the path of the thread, and the others being left stationary or rocked in the opposite direction, so as to draw weft from a bobbin and temporarily store it in zigzag formation. When the end of the weft has been presented to a gripper shuttle and the shuttle is picked, the levers are swung back to bring the eyes into alignment, the lever nearest the shuttle moving first followed by the others in quick succession. As described, there are two sets of levers operating in opposite phase on separate but identical weft threads, so that one set is drawing weft from a bobbin whilst p the other set is releasing its weft to the shuttle. Each lever is actuated by a connecting rod driven by a pair of conjugate cams, which also actuate a lever of the other set; the point of attachment of the connecting rod to the lever can be varied to alter the angle of swing and hence the amount of weft drawn off; alternatively, each lever may have a row of guide eyes at different distances from its pivot. Rods moved endwise by the cams may be substituted for the levers.
