Abstract
In the production of pattern-cut bent glass sheets the cut bent sheet is supported upon a shaped ring-type mould of a smaller size but of substantially similar outline, re-heated and then cooled whilst contact is maintained between the mould surfaces and a portion of the sheet spaced inwardly of its edge such that on cooling the marginal edge portions of the sheet are placed in compression. Initially a block-size sheet is bent in a conventional manner such that an area of the sheet, having an outline equivalent to that of the cut sheet, is placed in compression, so that on cooling the bent sheet may be cut, the cut being made through the centre of the compression zone. The pattern-cut bent sheet is then placed on the ring mould surfaces 53 (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) and placed in a furnace for reheating. The edges of the sheet 54 overhang the mould such that on cooling an area of compression d is formed. The sheets are reheated to a temperature above 940 DEG F. (500 DEG C.) to relieve all stress therein but not sufficient to cause further bending. A predetermined gradient of tension may be created in the area of the sheet within the support surfaces 53 by using different thicknesses 56, 57, 58 of a perforated shield which extend between surfaces 53 below the glass, thus giving rise to different rates of cooling.
