Abstract
1,040,312. Seaming. T. E. LAXO. May 3, 1963 [May 3, 1962], No. 17588/63. Heading B3J. A can body side seamer which includes a horn for supporting a can body blank thereon with hooks along opposite edges of said blank interlocked and means for delivering an impact to the interlocked edges comprises a crankshaft, a connecting rod mounted thereon the other end of which is pivotally connected to a crosshead, a guide member having opposite sides parallel to the axis of the crank-shaft, and a roller carrier having a pair of guide rollers, each roller engaging one of the parallel sides and one of said guide member and carrier member being fixed and the other mounted on said crosshead. A bumper steel 32 is secured to the upper end of a crosshead 30 which is pivotally mounted on a pin 28 connected to one end of a connecting rod 22 the other end of which is rotatably mounted on a crank pin 26 of a driven shaft 20. The crosshead is constrained to move in a vertical path by a pair of eccentrically mounted adjustable guide rollers 38, mounted on the lower end of an arm 36 attached to the crosshead, which straddle the parallel sides of a hardened steel block 40 disposed vertically on the machine frame 12 and by a guide arm 50 pivotally connected at 52, Fig. 2 (not shown), to one end of the frame 12 and at the other end to a block 58 attached to the crosshead. The arm 50 is positioned so that when the bumper reaches the point of impact with a forming horn 14 the crosshead has substantially no horizontal component of motion. The rollers 38 may be adjusted so that when the bumper steel is in its uppermost position it is slightly tilted and hence delivers a harder blow on one side of an overlapped can seam. Various bumper steels may be fitted to suit different can sizes.
