Abstract

Halogen containing organo-silicon compounds are prepared by reacting an organo-cyclo-tetra-siloxane with a silane containing at least one silicon-bonded halogen atom, in the presence of an amide of formula RR1N-CHO, wherein R and R1 are each monovalent hydrocarbon groups or hydrogen, and optionally in the presence of magnesium. Suitable reactants are listed. In a typical Example (1) octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane is reacted with dimethyldichlorosilane in the presence of N,N-dimethyl formamide giving 1,9 - dichlorodecamethylpentasiloxane and 1,7-dichlorooctamethyltetrasiloxane.
