Abstract

In a communications system where different protocols are sent from a transmitting terminal to a receiving terminal, a method of transmitting specific protocol instructions information comprising: pre-storing information/instructions regarding said protocols at the receiving terminal; the receiving terminal determining which of said protocols is to be next sent by said transmitting terminal; the transmitting terminal sending data only relating to variable data within a specific protocol instruction; and from this the receiving terminal interpreting the specific protocol instruction; and wherein variable data is compressed into a number of bits, the number of bits relating to the number of options of variable data that could be sent, said options being pre-stored or being able to be interpreted at the receiving terminal. The invention has particular application to where the protocols instruction is in Backus Naur or BNF form, and can use Huffman coding for the compression.
