Abstract

One liquid such as tetraethyl lead is added to petrol by measurement of the mass flow. This method allows a very high precision to be obtained and allows the flow to be measured over a wide range of conditions. A cylindrical reservoir (1) is mounted vertically and has a plonger (3) suspended within it from a horizontal shaft (2). Strain gauges (4) with a detector circuit (20) to which an A/D converter (6) is connected sense the level. This allows a calculater (18) to control a three-way valve (9). The calculater ensures that the additive from a reservoir (7) fills the measuring reservoir (1) when the level falls to a particular level. When full it is pumped (14) into a large reservoir (15) containing petrol which is pumped (17) in via a large diameter pipe.
