Abstract

Furnace roof is formed by applying rigid insulating panels of layered ceramic fibre fleece and an outer layer of ceramic fibre mat of high refractoriness. The roof is formed of rectangular modules of about 1 m2 area, comprising boxes made from sheet steel, each having flanged edges on all four sides and >=2 stiffeners fixed at their ends to certain of the flanges. The roof is supported from these modules by both passing through holes arranged in the mass of fibres so as to compress folded-over parts of the mat-trapped against the flanges of adjacent modules and which are applied in the cold against the edges of the rigid insulating panels and the layered fleece. Application of the ceramic fibre mat can be effected taking account of the shrinkage which the mats undergo as the temp. rises, so as to void melting the material in a direction which would produce gas passages risking damage to the weakest insulating panels or the metal of the roof.
