Abstract

Fruit contg. granular seeds is fed via a hopper and regulating feeder into an oven. The fruit passes through the oven on a belt or vibratory transporter and is heated by means of ultra-high frequency electromagnetic waves or infra-red radiation to the desired temp. It then passes through a second chamber in which the temp. is maintained. This chamber is insulated and equipped with sec. heating which may be similar to the heating system in the first chamber, or, as pref. resistance heaters. The treated fruit then passes through a crushing or rolling device into a cooler and thence to storage or subsequent treatment. The best treatment for each type of fruit is predetermined experimentally and then the temp. to which the fruit is heated in the first section is adjusted by varying the intensity of the radiation or by switching it on and off, and the duration of each stage is varied by adjusting the feed rate and length of travel through each section. The system enables the rate of heating, duration of treatment and temp. to be precisely regulated according to the nature of the fruit being treated. The result of this is an improved final content of digestible protein and energy.
