Abstract

Vulcanised elastomer compsn. contains up to 10 wt.% chopped aramid fibres. The chopped fibres may be randomly dispersed in the matrix, or directionally oriented in it. The fibres are 0.04-0.5 mm long and have a dia. of 0.03 mm. The aramid may be "Kevlar" (RTM). Suitable material for the elastomeric matrix is neoprene or nitrile rubber blend. The compsn. is used e.g. for mfr. of extruded, reinforced, elastomeric tubes, pipes, hoses, tyres or transmission belts. The prods. show considerable increase in modulus of elasticity.
