Abstract
Protective helmets comprises a layer of flexible elastic material (II) between an external shell of rigid material (I) and an internal shell of semi-rigid material (III), so that the intermediate layer suppresses transmission of relatively low energy shocks from the outer shell to the inner shell. Specifically (II) is an open- or closed-cell foam of polyethylene, polyurethane or rubber, (I) is of resin-impregnated glass fibre, polycarbonate, polypropylene, nylon or ABS, and (III) is of expanded polystyrene. Pref. the helmet has a cosmetic internal textile lining. Using a Fr standard falling wt. impact test under low energy conditions, the transmitted energy is 3.6-4.0 kN compared with >5 kN for helmet layer construction in a (I)/(III)/(II) sequence from outside to inside. Under high energy impact test conditions, the transmitted energy was 8-10 kN, to satisfy a specification limit of =15 kN for motorcyclists' helmets.
