Abstract
Continuous casting appts. comprises a tundish connected to a mould via a refractory conduit and withdrawal rolls for drawing a cast ingot from the mould. The conduit, mould and path between the withdrawal rolls are coaxial with each other on an axis inclined to the horizontal at an angle between 3 degrees and 15 degrees. The ratio between the cross-sectional area of the conduit interior channel and that of the mould being within the range of from 0.2:1 to 0.7:1. Gases are almost completely eliminated from the cast ingot and the appts. is of relatively small bulk and structural height. The combination of the inclination of the appts. and the appropriate cross-sectional area ratio, produces good quality casting metal.
